Five Lacatelles

A splendid work of medium difficulty, these five pieces are of contrasting style, tempi and mood, yet providing ample interest and excitement to be considered for performance. Originally titled Five Bagatelles, I realized that everyone writes Bagatelles! The word Bagatelle sounds like Locatelli, the famous Italian Baroque composer. By combining Locatelli and Bagatelle, I invented the word Lacatelles, pronounced Lock-a-telz.

Elegy

The Elegy was mournfully conveyed to me on the eve of my Father’s death. Without awareness, my fingers were mysteriously guided through each solemn phrase; start to finish, as if I had played it a million times, except for the last few measures, that refused to be reveled.

It wasn’t until the day of his passing that my fingers, once again were ushered through the final phrase; an ascending g-minor scale in 3rds followed by a retarding repetition of pizzicato notes. This represents his ascent and final heartbeats, growing fainter, slower and weaker, until silence surmounts.

The Elegy is a very heartrending work; with a peaceful A-section that recalls a wonderful life, and a dark contrasting B-section that anticipates sorrow, yet in the end, looking ahead to a joyful future.

Three Laments

A breathtaking set of highly expressive, intimate and captivating compositions, demanding strong technique and gentle sensitivity. Although each Lament is of similar form, tempi and rhythmic sequence, they are quite diverse in character, with exquisite melodies and haunting dissonances.
